Left part of a statue head adjusted to the plaster cast of the right part, located today in the Rodin Museum in Paris. The Acropolis Museum part was found at the excavations conducted at Serpentzes on the south slope of the Acropolis during the years 1876-1879.
It depicts a mature bearded man with sunken cheeks, pronounced cheek bones and deep set wrinkles on his forehead. His eyes are almond shaped with the pupil and iris denoted with incisions. The short hair falls over the forehead and temples, joins the wavy beard that covers the cheeks and ends in curly locks below the chin. The moustache that covers the upper lip is also rendered with wavy lines. The neck ending is shaped in a way that allows it to be fitted in a corresponding cavity on the statue’s torso.
Although the exact identity of the portrayed man is unknown, he most certainly would have been a distinguished Athenian citizen of the 3rd cent. AD, who was honoured with a statue. Maybe he was Publius Herennius Dexippus whose name was linked with the repulsion of the Heruli after they invaded Athens in AD 267.
When and where exactly the part displayed in the Rodin Museum was found is unknown but we are aware that the sculptor Auguste Rodin, an enthusiast of ancient Greek art, bought it in 1916 for his private collection of antiquities.
