The sanctuaries

Caves and natural plateaus in the Acropolis’ surrounding slopes accommodated the worship of gods, heroes and nymphs. Most were popular cults, revered by the Athenians alongside the official gods worshiped in the large temples on top of the Rock. The South Slope, however, hosted two of the city's most important sanctuaries – those of Asklepios and Dionysos.
