The ancient civilizations of Basilicata. Treasures emerging to light

11th – 6th cent. B.C.

The Acropolis Museum presents the exhibition ‘The ancient civilizations of Basilicata. Treasures emerging to light’ in its Temporary Exhibition Gallery. This exhibition is the result of the work of many scholars who have dedicated years to highlighting the culture of a region in southern Italy, the area in the middle of the Gulf of Taranto, the land of Oenotria, today’s Basilicata. This exhibition will allow visitors to admire the civilization that the Greeks from the Peloponnese and the islands of ancient Hellas encountered on their long journeys, undertaken to settle in the lands of Italy and Sicily, and above all in the coastal areas known as Magna Graecia.

This exhibition focuses on the specific area of Basilicata, highlighting the civilization of this region from the end of the Bronze Age (11th century BC) and the Early Iron Age, right up until the 6th century BC. The exhibition comprises more than 300 objects from the ‘invisible’ collections preserved up until recently in the warehouses of the National Museum of Siritide, the National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto, and the National Archaeological Museum “Domenico Ridola” in Matera. It narrates the complex interactions between Greek races that settled on the coasts and local populations that inhabited the extensive hinterland, within a general framework of intense movements of people, hospitality relations, gift exchanges, herd movements and trade.

The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Culture in Italy – General Directorate of Museums, with the National Museums of Matera and the Regional Directorate National Museums of Basilicata, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Italy. It is also realized with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Greece and the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens, in collaboration with the Acropolis Museum.

In parallel with the exhibition at the Acropolis Museum, the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens will present a display of 20 objects from the region of Basilicata. More information: iicatene.esteri.it
