Found in 1876 south of the Acropolis in two fragments, one of which, preserving twenty-two lines of a resolution, is currently at the Epigraphical Museum of Athens (EM 857). The part exhibited in the Acropolis Museum preserves part of the relief decoration as well as the first nineteen lines of the decree.
The resolution, carved in the Ionic alphabet, was issued when the Eponymous Archon was Molon– whose name and official rank we read in the first line. The resolution concerns the formation of a defensive alliance between Athens and four cities and federations of the Peloponnese: Arkadia, Achaia, Elis and Phleious. This alliance was established after the battle of Mantinea in 362 BC, when Sparta, Athens and their allies were defeated by Thebes, a great military force at that time.
The relief depicts Athena, as the representative of Athens, and Hera with Zeus who is seated on a throne, as the representatives of the Peloponnese since their sanctuary in Olympia was the most important one in the wider area.
