Plaque decorated in the black-figure technique against a white ground. It was retrieved in fragments between 1865 and 1874 during the foundation works of the old Acropolis museum. The plaque has been mended and restored in plaster. Two suspension holes are pierced in the upper corners whereas all over the surface are retained traces of fire.
Athena Promachos mounts a chariot. She wears a long chiton, aegis and Attic-type helmet while having the reins in one hand and her spear in the other. Preserved is also the back of another figure next to the horses whereas Hermes, in his winged boots, holds his caduceus and stands facing the horses. The inscription HΕΡΝΕΣ painted between his and the horses’ legs denotes who he is. Above the goddess’ head is painted the inscription ΣΚΥΘΕΣ ΕΓΡ[ΑΦΣΕΝ], which reads “Skythes painted this”, and is the plaque’s painter signature. At the right end of the plaque, a maeander band.
