The expatriate Goddesses of the Parthenon

 

On the occasion of World Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 March 2022, the Acropolis Museum organized the special event "The expatriate Goddesses of the Parthenon", with a presentation of Ancient Greek poetesses’ in a music performance of part of the work "The Silents’ Fragments", composed by Lena Platonos and performed by Maria Farantouri. This special event was organized in collaboration with the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis Foundation, in the presence of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic Ms. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

"Athenians did not choose Zeus or Poseidon, but a female goddess, Athena, to use and project onto her the characteristics of their own society", mentioned the President of the Acropolis Museum, Professor Dimitrios Pandermalis.

Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO, Mrs Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, spoke about the thread of history that connects the fate of women throughout the centuries, making special reference to women who are severely tested by armed conflicts and violent uprooting from their homelands.

Acropolis Museum General Director, Professor Nikolaos Chr. Stampolidis referred to the symbolism of the depiction of female figures in the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon, to the most religious and social event of the city of Athens, the Panathenaic procession, and he also spoke about the estranged goddesses, who, far from the monument to which they belong, await their return to their homeland.
