Venetian noble, admiral, commander in chief and doge of Venice from 1619-1694. In 1685 he was appointed commander of the Venetian fleet and in 1687 during the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian war (1684-1689), he besieged the Acropolis which was under Ottoman-Turkish Rule. On the night of the 26th of September, one of Morosini's artillery shells detonated a cache of gunpowder stored inside the Parthenon which had already been converted into a mosque. The resulting explosion destroyed the largest part of the building.
