Epithet of the goddess Athena signifying her as the protectress of the Acropolis and the city of Athens. She was worshipped in successive temples -the small Geometric temple, the Archaic "Old Temple" and the Classical Erechtheion- that were built in the north part of the Acropolis' summit, in the place previously occupied by the Mycenaean palace. These temples housed Athena's sacred idol, the xoanon, which was made out of olive tree wood and the Athenians believed that Zeus had send it from the sky.
