Loutrophoros-hydria decorated in the black-figure technique. It was found in 1957 in the Sanctuary of the Nymphe and was pieced together from many fragments and restored.
On the neck of the vase a loutrophoria procession is depicted, framed by narrow bands of floral ornaments. A young boy and a girl, chosen by the bride’s family to carry the decorated loutrophoros, lead the procession. Behind them a woman holding branches, a flute-player and five women are following, with the two latter ones dancing. The inscription [Υ]MENΥMENAIEΥΥMEAIE states that the song accompanying the procession is the hymenaios.
The vase’s body is decorated with the “Judgment of Paris”: Hermes with a caduceus, winged sandals and petasos is leading Hera, Athena and Aphrodite to Paris, so that he can decide which one is more beautiful. On the vase’s other side five figures wearing long garments are depicted. Lower on the vessel there is a band decorated with pairs of facing Sirens and roosters, as well as lotus flowers and palmettes. Beneath the horizontal handles a sitting Sphinx is depicted and the lowest part of the pot’s body is adorned with rays and a tongue motif.
