Found in two fragments in 1887, during excavations on the Acropolis. Preserved are the first seven lines of an honorary decree, carved in the Ionic alphabet.

The decree, which relates to the protection of Athenian trade routes in the Hellespont region, states that Athens honours the ambassadors of Abydos, a city on the Hellespont’s Asiatic coast. Five names are recorded: Mestor and Prokles, sons of Leomestoros, and Aristeides, Demophanes and Satyros, sons of Diagoras. However, their descendants are also included in the honours.

In the relief, Athena, dressed in a peplos and himation, is depicted sitting with a representative of the honorees. On her knees rests an eagle, the symbol of Abydos; her helmet is placed on the ground next to her and she was probably holding in her right hand a spear rendered with colour. Her interlocutor, who as a mortal appears at a smaller scale, is standing in front of her.
