Head of Athena statue from the Acropolis excavations. It preserves the neck, the lower part of which is worked in such a way as to enable its adjustment into the statue torso.

The goddess’ face is typical of the Archaic sculpture: almond-shaped eyes, arched brows and slightly upward turned lips’ corners that form the so-called “Archaic smile”. Traces of red colour remain on the lips and the irises and black on the round earrings. Her wavy hair, parted in the middle, is visible beneath the helmet and retains a vivid red colour which must have been used as the undercoat before the final hue was applied. At the top of the head the preserved drill possibly facilitated the adjustment of the helmet crest.

It has been suggested that the head together with the torso Ακρ. 159 and perhaps the hand that holds a shield Ακρ. 338 belong to the same statue.
