Reconstruction of a stele that depicts the foundation of the Sanctuary of Asklepios. The stele consists of a plaque decorated with relief scenes on both sides that is supported by a pillar.
On the front the founder of the Athenian Sanctuary of Asklepios, Telemachos, stands before Asklepios and his daughter Hygeia. The young woman sits on a sacred altar beneath which a molossus dog rests. In the background, between her and the god, hang surgical implements.
On the back represented are the sanctuary entrance as well as a stork on a tree trunk which implies the location of the sanctuary near the Pelasgicon wall. To the viewer’s right are a ship’s bow, another molossus dog, a relief on a pillar with a scene of enkoimesis (healing process followed during sleep) and the bust of a dog. The vessel signifies the arrival of the god’s image from Asklepios important sanctuary at Epidaurus through sea. The image arrived at the port of Zea, where a smaller sanctuary was established, and later was transferred to Athens.
