Fragment of an inscribed stele that records the annual revenue and expenditure account of the officials whom the Athenian state had charged with overseeing the construction of the colossal chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos commissioned from Pheidias.

The inscription is arranged in two columns with the left containing only sums of money. The text is inscribed stoichedon and written in the Attic alphabet. Nine lines from the right column and four from the left are preserved. The text states the overall review of one year and mentions the cost of gold that would be used for constructing the goddess’ statue. As indicated by its good preservation state, the stele must have been displayed inside the Parthenon.

On this stele another inscription ΕΜ 6738 was also carved which stated the financial account of the preceding year.

The unusually large sums spent, indicate that the gold employed in the construction of the statue of Athena Parthenos belonged to the public treasury and could be used in case of emergency.
