In the footsteps of the city-state

From the middle of the 8th century BC when burials cease, the area resumes its previous residential-industrial character. It is then that the first four streets were laid out, which w ere to become the longer-lasting ones of the site.

This is the time when Athens undergoes structural changes. The institution of kingship weakens; power passes to a small group of wealthy nobles; administration moves from the Acropolis to the lower city and in Athens the city-state, the basic cell of political and urban organisation in ancient Greece, is gradually born.

Inhabitants -with the majority being poor farmers- reside at the slopes and foothills of the Acropolis, and small rural communities in the countryside. Some of them engage with the production of clay vases decorated with geometric patterns. The excellent quality of their products promotes commerce and boosts the economy of the city.

How exactly this area contributed to the new era, we do not know with certainty. However, wells, pits with destroyed house ware, few traces of walls and two ceramic kilns located in different areas of the site, indicate a more structured residential and industrial activity.
