The Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Acropolis Museum organized an international meeting titled ‘Parthenon and Democracy’, in the auditorium of the Museum, on Friday 16 September 2022.
This meeting was held on the occasion of the General Assembly of the International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures which took place the previous day at the Acropolis Museum, but also as a reminder of the UNESCO Summit a year ago (September 2021). In this Summit, a Decision was taken for the first time which, in addition to the legal, right and ethical aspect of the Greek request, also recognizes its transnational/intergovernmental character. This decision was ratified by all participating states at the May 2022 UNESCO Assembly in Paris.
On the subject of the reunification much progress has been made throughout the past year, initially with the deposit of the ‘Fagan fragment’ from Palermo to the Acropolis Museum in January 2022, and with its permanent reunification in the east frieze of the Parthenon in the Acropolis Museum in June 2022. The conversion of the British Press in favor of the reunification of the architectural sculptures of the Parthenon, which also represents the majority of the British people, has been strengthened by much received publicity worldwide, as well as the growing persistence of the public opinion in favor of their reunification, so that the Parthenon, the symbol of world Culture and Democracy, be finally united in the Acropolis Museum.
