Fragment from a black-figure plaque with Aphrodite holding Eros and Himeros. It was unearthed in July of 1888 during the excavations conducted on the Acropolis near the Parthenon.
The goddess is draped in a peplos and himation and has a wreath on her head. She holds in her arms two small, naked figures with their hands raised. Over their heads are inscribed their names: ΗΙΜΕΡΟΣ and Ε[ΡΟΣ]. Both the goddess and children turn to the viewer’s right which indicates that the scene continued towards that part. The top of the scene is framed with a narrow, black band whereas the left side is more elaborately adorned. Added white colour has been used for the exposed female flesh and red for other details.
It has been suggested that the two small figures are not Eros and Himeros but personifications of the goddess’ different erotic aspects.
