Intact fusiform unguentarium found in 1955 on the south slope of the Acropolis. It is plump with a shallow groove at the junction of the flat base and the solid foot. The neck is cylindrical and widens into an everted mouth with chamfered rim. The surface is grey and decorated with horizontal white bands. The ‘blisters’ all over the surface may be due to the vessel’s firing conditions.

Unguentaria were used for holding and transporting perfume oils as well as various other liquids and solids, such as honey, mastic and spices. Very often fusiform unguentaria were wrapped in wicker mesh that protected them from breaking and their lid was probably made of some perishable material, like wax or cork.
