Head of a youth’s statue of natural scale. It was found in 1865-1866 in the area of the Sanctuary of Pandion.

The young man has short hair, tightly bound by a band, a sign that he was an athlete, a winner in an athletic contest. The smooth rendering of his skin comes in contrast with the rough texture of his hair over his forehead, temples and the nape of his neck, which was probably better suited to receive the applied colour over it. However, other researchers believe that this rough rendering is the result of an intervention made at a later date so that a helmet could be added to the head.

The serious, introvert facial expression places this sculpture as a later work of the “Severe Style”. The similarities between this head and the figures of young men in the Parthenon's frieze led to the hypothesis that it was created within Pheidias' circle.
