It was found in 1877 in the Sanctuary of Asklepios. The shape of the base is rectangular with a depression on its upper surface for the adjustment of a dedication, perhaps a statue, most possibly offered by a doctor.

The front features a relief representation of medical implements. Between two suction cups is an open box that contains surgery implements neatly arranged within the internal sections. They are five surgical scalpels for cutting through skin and a curved implement with one rounded end suggested to have been employed during the removal of stones from the urethral opening or bladder.

Medical suction cups in antiquity made usually of bronze were similarly used to modern ones. The physicians heated the interior of the cups and then applied them on the patient’s body enhancing thus skin blood flow. In other cases, either before or after the cups’ application, they slightly made an incision with a scalpel to draw blood from the vein or artery. The use of suction cups helped the treatment of various disorders, such as headaches and abdominal pain, neuralgia, arthritis and rheumatic conditions, poor limb circulation, spasms of back muscles, respiratory problems etc.
