It was found in 1957 near the peribolos of the Sanctuary of the Nymphe on the south slope of the Acropolis.

The stone was embedded in the ground and that is why its lowest part is roughly worked. On its front visible side is inscribed ΗΟΡΟΣ ΗΙΕΡΟ ΝΥΜΦΗΣ, which reads “Boundary stone of the sanctuary of the Nymph”.

Boundary stones belong to a distinct category of inscriptions that marked the ownership and asylum limits of a sanctuary or a temple, a city or a private piece of land, and during the Roman period, a military zone. In some cases the inscriptions are restricted only to the term ΟΡΟΣ whereas in other cases they include detailed prohibitions or sacred laws.
