Part of an Ionic capital that crowned one of the columns framing the central passageway of the Propylaia on the Acropolis. Preserved are part of the echinus, the proskephalaion and one volute.

The echinus was adorned with inlaid bronze ornaments, perhaps flowers and palmettes today lost. This capital is so carefully carved and bears such sophisticated decoration that it one of the finest examples of classical architecture.
