Greek coin. It dates from the 6th cent. BC and was the equivalent of six obols, the previous numismatic unit. The name drachma derives from the Greek verb "drattomai" which means "hold something tightly", since a person could hold in his palm six iron obols. The obols, had the shape of a rod and were used as currency before the invention of coins in the 7th cent. BC.
